Iaido is the art of drawing the Japanese sword, cutting from the draw and re-sheathing the sword. Through a series of stylized scenarios ( kata) taken from Samurai history, Iaido students ( iaidoka) learn seemingly endless variations on this theme. But the greatest challenge lies in performing the movements flawlessly with a minimum of wasted.

Omori-ryu was said to have been created by Hayashi Rokudayu Morimasa, the ninth headmaster of the Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu, who lived from 1661 until 1732. It has been included in the Muso Shinden Ryu at the entry level, and contains the following techniques: Shohatto (初発刀) Inyoshintai (陰陽進退)

The roots of the Muso Shinden Ryū go back to the Sengoku-jidai (whole country at war era) in the 16th century. But, Muso Shinden Ryū itself is not too old. The credit for developing iaido or iaijutsū is given to a samurai by the name of Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu or Jinsuke Shigenobu (both names were used by the same man) who lived 1546-1621.

To give you an example of this in a koryu' let's look at Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu vs Muso Shinden Ryu and one very similar kata - the very first one Mae (MJER) / Shohatto (MSR). In both the kata is simple enough a horizontal cut delivered from the sheath, raise the sword over head, deliver a vertical cut, demonstrate zanhin, put the sword away.

Very briefly put, Muso Shinden ryu iaido (MSR) is one of the many styles of drawing the Japanese sword descended from Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu. As I have pointed out elsewhere on the website, Hayashizaki is considered the "founder" of sword drawing as a form distinct from fighting with swords already drawn.

Musō Shinden-ryū (夢想神伝流) is a style of sword-drawing art ( iaido) founded by Nakayama Hakudō (中山博道) in 1932. [1] Nakayama Hakudō studied under Hosokawa Yoshimasa, a master of the Shimomura branch (下村派) of Hasegawa Eishin-ryū, and Morimoto Tokumi, a fellow student of Ōe Masaji of the Tanimura branch (谷村派). [2]
